Rachael Pennell
Bare 'N' Blue
(Avid)
The talented British singer Rachael Pennell has a charming voice that perfectly fits the vintage material that she performs on her second CD. Unlike her debut, the big band album Papa Said, this set showcases her with a trio comprised of pianist Jack Honeyborne, bassist John Day and drummer Ritchie Bryant.
Although not copying any of her predecessors, Ms. Pennell's voice, sly wit, sense of swing and phrasing sound very much from the 1940s. She brings to life such tunes as Irving Berlin's underrated "You'd Be Surprised," "Embraceable You," "For All We Know," "Dream A Little Dream Of Me" and "Wild Is The Wind." The most contemporary song is "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" and the singer even manages to come up with something fresh to say on "God Bless The Child."
There are quite a few female jazz vocalists around these days. Rachael Pennell ranks with Tina May and just a couple others as one of the top jazz singers from England. Bare 'N' Blue is quite appealing and available from www.avidgroup.co.uk.
