Rachael has the ability of a great singer to command any stage on which she finds herself. As a trained actress, she has that essential element of the theatrical, which turns her songs into stories, and brings them to life. Equally at home in a smoky pub, where she concentrates on the blues, a sophisticated dining club, where she brings a smile to the audience with her wit and humour, or in the open air with a scratch Dixieland backing group, she has a great future ahead of her, and she is not doing so badly in the present.
She looks good at the centre of the stage, and that is no bad thing. She has a surprisingly deep voice, which gives her classical material an unusual and different quality. There are echoes of many singers from the past including Bessie Smith and Ella Fitzgerald, but she is truly her own woman.
There are many good young jazz singers around at the moment, but few of them are likely to make it as potential stars. It is about time that a big record company discovered Rachael and offered her that lucrative contract that she so richly deserves.
